Let the "Party" Begin!

You can see the sense of relief with the homeless now at Enslen and Elk Park. After a few days staying away, sort of, they are back in numbers. The beer is flowing. They should feel a lot better now that thugs are in custody for the beatings. I just wish they would congregate somewhere else, that's all. By 3:00 today, someone will be passed out.

Being homeless, they probably have to stay up most of the night to make sure they are safe, or wander around finding recyclables etc. They then sleep durring part of the day when think they are more or less safe, in public view. Not necessarily "passed out".

Unfortunately, there isn't any good place for these folks to go. The mental hospitals are closed, these folks are mostly unemployable (standards being strict these days) its ilegal to push a shopping cart around, illegal to swim in the canal or river, illegal to loiter or panhandle in most cases. Insurance is not affordable, the mission is strict and self rightious and closed in the middle of the day, and simple things like clean drinking water and sanitary facilities are hard to find on foot. Schools and Businesses don't want them around, and the neighbors don't like them around either.

I was hoping some kind of Hooverville could be placed at the north edge of town, near where home construction might be underway, at the site of a future park or parks, complete with restrooms and showers. Paid for by subdivision developers. Room for tents, bikes and bike trailers, old run down RV's. What do you think?

Yes, exactly Gary. A place they can go. I do not want any harm, but I DO want them out of the parks. They still need to be close to the mission or the Salvation Army where they can get a bed, unless a potential facility will bed them as well.

I and some of my friends play Petanque at the park. We have never had any trouble with the homeless folks and, in fact, Bird would always look after the court when we were not there. He is very depressed about the loss of his dog. If you are interested in learning and playing Petanque, we plan on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. No need to bring your own balls unless you have them!

I was wondering what the game was. Well, maybe I can come by some Wednesday evening. But you are right about Bird and the gang. They are for the most part harmless and sometimes engaging. I know that, and you know that, but an ordinary citizen who wants to go to the park does not know that. But, I will have to hit you up on the offer.

Thank you anonymous #2 for the information on the ball game. I assumed it was Bocce Ball, and am intrested as well.

I realize that my earlier comment about a Hooverville was a little half-baked. Durring the current recession or stagflation or whatever it is, it would not be beneficial for homeless to be on the edge of town as the construction jobs will no longer be there of course. Also, the services like Salvation Army, that you mention.

Am not saying that homeless have a "right" to use the park, but hopefully they grow to look at as one privilage worth protecting, as long is their behavior is reasonably acceptable. And, if neighbors are reasonably accepting of the situation.

Am glad to see the police were able to get the apparent perpatrators on Hackberry. From my experience they are more likely to arrest the innocent than the guilty, but we'll keep our fingers crossed.
