Good article. Good observation that they believe in their pride, don't like rules.

Like a lot of Americans.

When a prostitute was found beaten so badly on 9th street, the police said that hopefully this would serve as a deterant to others "against this lifestyle."

This is the same line of thinking that's coming from this editorial. The homeless are homeless because it's a lifestyle choice. They want to be homeless. Prostitutes aren't women trying to make money the only way they can - they're just whores who like to have sex for money.

So, as the economy gets worse and more people are foreclosed on and the homeless population swells - does that mean there are simply more people that 'want' to be homeless? Reality contradicts this whole line of thinking. Same thing happened in the 1980's when Reagan shut a lot of the clinics and mental wards down, and then everyone was out in the street. Same thing happens in LA where all the parolees are dumped right out into Skid Row, rejoining the same cycle of drugs, homelessness, and jail time.

Look at the numbers and read the stuff coming out of the main homeless organizations that do research on homelessness in the united states. The majority of people are those with mental health problems, and many struggle with drugs and drinking. These are social problems within society. You're making the case that people live outside just because they 'don't want to follow rules' and it's just ignoring all the information that we actually do have on the homeless. From taking to a lot of homeless, it seems all the do is follow rules. Sleep here at this shelter under these rules. Don't sleep here because of the police. Go here to eat and follow these rules...

But you're line of thinking IS helpful in justifying a 'tough on the homeless' approach, that in the end just means more repression and a bigger big brother for everyone. In the end, taking this line won't do anything to end homelessness or solve the problems that come from areas in Modesto where people with homes and people without homes live in the same area.

My line of thinking? I did not write the article. This article is true on how the homeless think. I have learned that since this article was written a year ago. Again, most of the homeless are abiding by the rules, its the vagrants that are not.
